July Sunday, July 13, 2008 Beginning to Intermediate Banjo with Master Musician Pat Cloud Have fun with the five-string banjo and learn some of the secrets that are right in front of you.
Pat Cloud was playing banjo professionally by age 16; soon afterwards he was touring with Bob Hope's USO Oriental Command tours of 1967 and 1970. He has been a Los Angeles studio musician for 35 years. In 1972, he began jazz studies with former Nat King Cole guitarist, Horace Hatchett and then with William Thrasher, and started to adapt a fluid jazz vocabulary to five-string banjo utilizing melodic technique pioneered by such banjoists as Carrol Best, Bobby Thompson and Bill Keith; he later continued jazz study with vibraphone player Dave Pike. In the 70s, he toured throughout the southeast with the New Tradition Bluegrass Band; in 1983, he recorded the LP, "Higher Power" (Flying Fish) with Barry Solomon and Bob Applebaum. As Tony Trishka describes his playing, "He is the first five-string player to achieve a wide-reaching command of the jazz vocabulary, and as such inhabit a rarefied world which he now shares with a select few. To hear him play is amazing, but to watch him elicit those streams of "boppish" notes from a predominantly bluegrass instrument is other-wordly."

A teenage member of the Yerba Buena Blues Band in the mid-1960's, he played Love-Ins and Sunset Strip nightclubs before leaving the country for most of the '70s. In 1978 he came back to the U.S. and teamed up with guitarist Kenny Sultan - a partnership that still flourishes today and has resulted in eight duo CDs and literally thousands of concerts and festivals all over the world.

Saturday, August 30, 2008 Marc Ford
Guitarist Marc Ford, who is best known for performing and recording with The Black Crowes and Ben Harper, began his career with the blues-rock outfit Burning Tree in the late 1980's. A power trio featuring Ford on guitars and vocals, Mark Dutton on bass and Doni Gray on drums, Burning Tree released their self-titled debut album on Epic Records in 1990. In late 1991, Marc Ford sat in several times with The Black Crowes in-concert, performing The Allman Brothers Band's classic hit, "Dreams." Ford toured with Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals for the majority of 2003, from which their live double disc, Live at the Hollywood Bowl was drawn from. Ford continued his association with Ben Harper and his band through the close of 2004, when he was called to rejoin The Black Crowes for their "All Join Hands" reunion run. This reunion would serve as the platform for one of the greatest rock and roll comebacks in recent years. It would be the first time Ford would take the stage again with the band and Black Crowes fans were beyond ecstatic when the news broke in March 2005. Ford never severed his ties with Harper, however, appearing on his 2006 album Both Sides of the Gun and performing a handful of shows in support.
